Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on the 24th of August 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay was motivated to pursue her love of art by her aunt Denise as a young girl. She was night nurses to afford her mother the time she needed throughout the day to indulge in the passion of literature, art, as well as theatre. DuVernay was first introduced to the film West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay saw how art was an effective way to spread activism. DuVernay learned to be socially aware by her mother. DuVernay lived in Compton for most of her childhood, but she would spend every summer with her father's extended family living in Lowndes County Alabama. Her father recalled watching the civil rights march of the past on the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. The time spent in Selma, Alabama during the summer, was later the inspiration to direct a movie about The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in 1990. Following graduation, she attended an institution called the University of California Los Angeles where she earned degrees in English as well as African American studies. When she was in school, DuVernay began to consider producing for the broadcast media. Her first job was as an assistant to CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being assigned to sit at the house of a member of the jury as well as look through their trash. When she was dissatisfied with journalism by the tasks she was given and deciding to go after an interest in public relations. DuVernay joined a small studio as a Junior Publicist right after college. The year 1999 was the time she founded her own business that specialized in public relations, The DuVernay Agency. The agency was the first to launch a variety of promotional and lifestyle networks that include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
